It is a new year and that means new movies are coming out. I know I already have quite the list of films that I am eager to see in 2012, and I bet you do as well. There are just so many things to look forward to when a new year comes around. Movies are obviously my favorite of those new things to look forward to, but I also like new music, more fun with friends and family, and exciting activities that have yet to pop into that head of yours. Oh and I forgot, I love best of lists from the precious year. Those are always fun too.

So you can see why I chose the below infographic to share with you all. It shows the most rented movies from Redboxes all across the country. How much fun is that? What is even more fun is the fact that I did indeed watch every single one of those films from all categories: action, comedy, drama, horror, and family. If you did not get a chance to see some of the films on this list, I definitely suggest you check them out!

Christmas time is here once again, and that means that in the midst of getting overly stressed out about gift buying and dealing with crazies at all the stores in the area, I am enjoying some awesome Christmas movies and special programs. Yes, I like Christmas movies too. I even get a little sentimental and watch some of these movies with my mom still like I did when I was a kid. You know, for her sake. There are a ton of Christmas movies out there. The Hallmark channel has a new one like every single day, so which ones do you definitely need to watch? Well, I have you covered…

If you want to laugh, there is no other movie out there for you other than National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. This movie is my favorite National Lampoon movie. You will follow the Griswald’s as they try to celebrate the holidays with the family and the patriarch Clark, played by Chevy Chase. always manages to create a mess of things. Cousin Eddie, played by Randy Quaid, is hilarious and just another cause for tension for Clark. I love this movie.

If you are a traditionalist, then A Christmas Story is for you. It is a cute movie that follows Ralphie on his quest to get a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas, even though all the adults in his life seem to think it’s not the best gift for him. You will get some good laughs from this family friendly movie.

If you want to relive your childhood, check out A Charlie Brown Christmas. Technically this is a television special, not a movie. It is an animated classic that I used to watch every Christmas as a child, and I have to admit, I still love it. I think you will love it too.

Rarely do I see a movie trailer for a book that I have read and think, “I must see that movie.” That was the case last week thought when I saw the preview of “The Hunger Games” movie. The book was beyond incredible, and when I saw the preview come on television I completely forgot whatever I was doing and became engulfed by what I was watching. From what I could tell from the trailer, the movie looks like it follows the book closely. Of course that is what any book lover wants to hear about a movie that is adapted from the book version.

The cast of the film looks well done featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark. Also in the movie are Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Lenny Kravitz.

If you have not yet read the books and want to before the movie comes out to theaters, then you still have plenty of time. The film will not be released until March 2012, but you can bet I will be sitting here anxiously waiting that date constantly checking in to see what else they can offer me at the website for it.

Check out the movie trailer to see what I am completely excited about, its da bomb!

It’s Friday, 11.11.11, and if you are not a Twi-hard itching for next Friday to be here like yesterday, then you might want to head to the theaters tonight to catch a flick before all the commotion that will start next week and likely not end until The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 is completely gone from the movie theaters. There are a lot of movies already playing that you might find interesting, as well as some new flicks opening tonight.

If you are looking for some family entertainment, the look no further than the animated Puss In Boots. This movie has been beating out all the other films for the past couple of weeks, and all ages enjoy the cocky feline. For something a little more adult you can watch Matthew Broderick and Eddie Murphey try to steal some serious amounts of money in Tower Heist. If neither of those sound like they are for you, take a look at today’s new releases and see if you can’t find something in one of these.

The Immortals – Theseus a Greek warrior goes to battle against the titans. If you like fantasy, action, and drama, then you will probably enjoy this film.

Melancholia – This film is obviously full of melancholy. It is a movie that depicts a relationship struggle as the end of the world nears.

Jack and Jill – If silly is what you want, sillyis what you will get from this Adam Sandler flick.

It is the middle of October and Halloween is quickly approaching. Aside from Christmas, Halloween is the next holiday to generate a lot of revenue in the United States. One of my favorite things about Halloween and the whole month of October, really, is the fact that scary movies are everywhere. I like to watch a few horror flicks each week of Halloween so I can really get into the spirit of events. I love old horror films, especially, but the new ones instill a little more fear in me because of how new technologies can make things look so very real.

I’m not the only person crazy for scary movies though. This infographic shows the 25 top grossing horror movies from 1970 to today. Check out the total gross revenues compared to the budgets. It is crazy. You can also find out some trick that were used in some of the movies, like the sounds in “The Exorcist were slaughtered pigs. And see how often Dracula shows up in movies since his debut.

Do you have any horror films that are your favorite that did not make the list? I think for the most part my favorite scream inducing films are all on here and accounted for.

If you are itching to get out of the house today, then might I recommend you head to your local movie theater? There are quite a few movies being released in theaters today, but only one has already started creating Oscar buzz. That movie is Moneyball.

The movie is actually based on a true story. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane the manager of the Oakland A’s with a partner Peter Brand played by Jonah Hill. The two have to find a way to create a winning baseball team with low funds and a ton of other obstacles. The do just that by using analysis done on the computer to find budget players that have the potential to win the game.

The movie also features Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt.

Watch the trailer below to see if Moneyball seems like your type of movie. It is sure getting a lot of attention from others, so more than likely it will be something that you will find interesting as well. If you have already seen the film, then let me know how you liked it by leaving a comment. Do you think that Brad deserves an Oscar for this character portrayal?

Today marks the opening of the adventure and drama film Rise of the Planet of the Apes which is the prequel to the other Planet of the Apes movies. The new film stars James Franco, a scientist trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. He then turns into the guardian of an ape name Caesar, and I will say no more as to not spoil the plot for you. Of course you probably know most of what will unfold having seen the past films and read the title of the movie.

In 1968 the original Planet of the Apes movie starred none other than the Charlton Heston. The plot of the movie unfolds to be that Apes rule a planet that some astronauts landed on and they force the humans into slavery. In the 2001 movie, it is pretty much the same plot. Apes rule, people are slaves except Mark Wahlberg is the captain in this version of the sci-fi thrilling action flick. No matter your favorite version, it is a must see movie, and I recommend seeing the new released Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie too. If that doesn’t convince you take a look at this infographic of the timeline to get you in the mood.

Best Movies To Watch When Toasty

Movies are fun for everyone to watch. I really cannot think of anyone who does not enjoy a good flick, especially if the time is right. The bulk herbal incense you just bought is burning, and everyone is ready for a good laugh. So throw one of these movies into the DVD player, sit back, chill, and laugh out loud. You’re sure to get a few good laughs from these movies.

Dazed and Confused

There is nothing better than a comedy with high school kids on the last day of school finding any way possible to get drunk or stoned. The story takes place in 1976, and features Matthew McConaughy, Ben Affleck, and Milla Jovovich. It’s been ranked fairly high on Cult Film lists since its release in 1993, and there are other lists that it tends to fall pretty high on.

Half Baked

The movie Half Baked is actually dubbed a stoner movie, so there you go, my friend. That’s a sure reason that you will definitely love this nutty film. Dave Chappelle, Jim Breuer, and Harland Williams are the frontmen of the movie. And some notorious people in the world, like Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, and Tommy Chong. With features like that, and a hilarious cast, you are going to be laughing the entire time, I assure you.

Pineapple Express

Seth Rogan and James Franco make quite a duo as they try to escape from a killer drug distributor. There a very few scenes where you see either of the main characters sober, and it’s a good thing, because they are hilarious when it’s the opposite. You can also test your knowledge on how well you can recognize some of the product, and find some new techniques. Like the crossjoint. I’m not sure if it works, but it’s sweet nonetheless.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

The two dope dealing Jay and Silent Bob are back in this film as they travel to reclaim the rights of their comic strip that Hollywood is trying to turn into a film. Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith are accompanied in the movie by a multitude of famous actors and actresses. They are nonstop funny, and their lovechild orangutan cracks me up everytime.

last weekend, Green Lantern opened in theaters around the country to slightly less than the projected (and hoped for) enthusiasm of fans of the comic franchise. It managed to bring in $52.6 million in its first weekend, placing it in the coveted number one spot for weekend movies in wide circulation, but the lion’s share of the ticket sales were in the first 24 hours. This kind of drop off during opening weekend usually indicates the film may be about to fizzle out early. There could be any number of reasons why Green Lantern, yet another recent Hollywood rendition of a comic book hero, failed to stun at the box office this weekend. For one thing, the effects are a tad weird; the superhero himself just isn’t well known, and lacks the followers other super heroes such as Spiderman and Batman have. It might even be a matter of star power, where Ryan Reynolds, just wasn’t the best choice for the role.

Despite bringing in $52.6 million on Father’s Day weekend, this movie had a reported budget of $200 million. Many of the other recent comic book films have far exceeded it in terms of opening weekend intake. The amount of money the film brought in is, in comparison, fairly disappointing and far below the projections estimated by the film producers.

Warner Brothers, taking a more optimistic stance, said, “We’re very happy with it.” Dan Fellman calls the movie’s “very respectable” CinemaScore of “B,” and its impressive Father’s Day success for having taken in $500,000 more on Sunday than earlyestimates had indicated as hints that the film had a stronger showing than media coverage suggests. “Rushing to judgment is easy to do,” he said, “especially when the movie is not well reviewed.”

Well reviewed, Green Lantern was not. It only got one lousy tomato at Rotten Tomatoes, for goodness’ sake. Reviewers from the general public, many of whom are actually fans of the comic books, have referred to the special effects as “dorky,” “cheesy,” and “a CGI demo reel.” That’s not a warm reception.

Only the weeks ahead will prove just how well Green Lantern is actually being received. Other super hero movies of this season, namely Thor and X-Men: First Class, respectively took in $65 million and $55 million on their opening weekends, with ticket sales remaining fairly strong in ensuing weeks. Warner Brothers hopes Green Lantern will follow suit. After all, Sunday was Father’s Day — and although some people make a movie day outing of that holiday, many people kick it off with a backyard barbeque and an afternoon of spending time with the family. This coming weekend could paint a brighter picture for our cosmic hero. Stay tuned.

With the summer theater season in full tilt, caching the blockbusters is a priority on many movie goers’ minds — but summer Hollywood blockbusters are not the only hot stuff happening in theaters around the country this summer. There are several other great movies you’ll be likely to miss, if you aren’t paying attention, and since you probably aren’t I’m going to tell you a little about one you might want to check out.

Remember Niles Crane from televison’s long running hit series Frasier? The actor who played the brother of Frasier Crane, David Hyde Pierce, plays the role of Warwick Wilson in The Perfect Host. Pierce, a Tony and four-time Emmy Award-winning actor, has on Broadway recently starred in Curtains, which won him the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. He is famed for having originated the role of Brave Sir Robin in Monty Python’s Broadway hit, Spamalot. He further created roles in Off-Broadway and regional productions of Mark O’Donnell’s That’s it Folks! and Richard Greenberg’s The Author’s Voice. His other stage work includes appearances in Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. The recent Sundance Film Festival Selection The Perfect Host brings Piece to the big screen as a man who is master of his castle, the home where he considers himself to be an impeccable host. In an instance of ill timing and a twist of fate, he unknowingly invites a wanted criminal into his home just as he is preparing for an elegant party.

The con who tricks his way into this party, a man who has just committed a bank robbery and who has nowhere to turn to get off the streets quickly, soon finds himself in over his head when his host turns out to be quite unusual. This psychological thriller is sure to keep you guessing as the dark comedy and the game of cat-and-mouse ensues between Pierce and his co-star Clayne Crawford, who finds himself captive in a hellish dinner party he quickly wishes he had never crashed into. I will not go into great detail at this time explaining what makes the dinner party so terrible, so that you can enjoy it when you see it in the theater. Just make sure you get plenty of popcorn and have someone near by to snuggle up with.
